Residential Composting Expansion

Now that we have a county composting facility on the property of the trash transfer station, there is a commercial "curb to compost" service. Residents can self haul to the composting facility, but there is not currently a residential equivalent to the "curb to compost" program for businesses. Residential Composting Expansion could include a subscription service for self-hauling to the compost facility; a successful, low contamination drop off point for compost at the recycling center; free or reduced cost composting for businesses that serve as a drop off/inspection location; lunch scrap composting at TCSD.

ISWR is exploring some of these options, but is looking for additional partners and support.

Expected Impacts: Food waste is a large part of the total tonnage of waste transported out of Teton County. Through composting, we have the opportunity to reduce landfill loads immensely, reducing emissions from waste transportation and methane emissions from the landfill. The goal of the composting program is to divert 20% of the waste stream from the landfill. Each 350 tons of compost represents 1% of the total waste stream and 24 tons of CO2e emitted in transport. In 2019 Grand Teton National Park concessionaires composted over 180 tons of food waste.

Synergy with other priorities: This program also implements the community’s Road to Zero Waste plan to divert 40% of community waste from landfills.
