Workplace Electric Vehicle Charging

At recent growth rates there will be 3,500 electric vehicles (EVs) registered in Teton County by 2030 and even more passing through as EV range and highway charging infrastructure increases. To support this growth in EVs and encourage electric vehicle adoption up to 5,500 electric vehicles by 2030, 266 Level 2 workplace charging stations, 214 public Level 2 charging stations, and 69 public DC Fast Charging stations will be needed. Yellowstone Teton Clean Cities is working to establish an incentive program that would address the need for the 266 Level 2 workplace charging stations. Yellowstone Teton Clean Cities would administer a rebate program that would pay for the cost of installation of Level 2 charging stations at workplaces, while also providing information and contacts that would help land owners understand the costs and benefits of installation. The program would prioritize businesses committed to transitioning to 100% electric fleet vehicles by 2030, but would be available to any business providing parking for its employees.

Yellowstone Teton Clean Cities has begun to design the program and is now seeking funding and partners to launch the effort.

Expected Impacts: Surface transportation accounted for 62% of our greenhouse gas emissions in 2021. Because of how green our electricity is, electrification of our ground transportation would eliminate almost all of those emissions. Emissions from EV charging in Jackson are about 3% of the tailpipe emissions from the average gasoline vehicle on a per mile basis. The more the community can do to electrify ground transportation the better. Workplace charging also limits the need for at-home charging in support of an EV. Installing at-home charging can often be most difficult in the older and multifamily homes that are most affordable to the workforce.
